🌞✨🪟🍃 Community Garden by Kat Odina. Kat is an artist interested in the confluence of the other-worldly and the worldly. Her diverse spiritual upbringing, born to an actress and a playwright, taught her the importance of elevating imaginations in order to encourage interconnectedness. She hopes to do this exploring the ethereal and its peripheral presence in the everyday. “Community Garden is my first attempt at larger sculptural work. I wanted to build on the techniques I used for my smaller ‘box world’ sculptures and create a more immersive dreamscape that people can wander through. It’s partly inspired by ‘The Garden of Live Flowers’ chapter in Alice in Wonderland. As I created this for the zzeg zzag party, I wanted to do something fun, humorous and somewhat familiar - which made my first set design project less intimidating. The flowers Alice talks to in Wonderland are awake because [“In most gardens” the Tiger-lily said, “they make the beds too soft—so that the flowers are always asleep.”] These flowers, rooted in glass, rocks and discarded material items are wide awake and each marvelling at the light in their own way. I think gardens are good for people. I think a garden culture of planting things, tending to them, creating beautiful environments and seeing ourselves and others reflected in the diversity of plants…etc would help us all. Community Garden is something of a work in progress as it was created in the week leading up to the party whenever I had time between shifts.
